MAJOR FUNCTION:
 
Tutors provide academic support in the form of tutoring to individuals and structured small groups to facilitate student academic success. Most tutors work an average of 2 -10 hours per week, typically tutoring subjects in their major and/or minor fields. Tutors may be assigned to individuals and/or requested small groups throughout the semester. ASAP is hiring tutors for all subject areas (Business; Social Sciences: Sociology, History, Psychology;  Science: Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Biology; Computer Science; Engineering; Math: upper division only; Natural Resources; Agricultural Sciences; Family & Consumer Sciences; Art;  Architecture; Foreign Languages; etc.).
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibility, % of Time, Essential/Marginal
 
Provide academic support to UI students by: 85%, Essential
 

         scheduling regular tutoring sessions with eligible individual students

         tutoring students in pre-arranged, structured small groups

         adapting to studentsí individual/group needs and learning styles

         fostering active learning and independent thinking

         aiding in comprehension of course material

         facilitating group discussion and group learning in small groups sessions

         modeling appropriate study skills, attitude, and behavior (no cell phones, social media, or headphones)

 
Establish and maintain program requirements by: 10% Essential
 

         completion of mandatory pre-service training 

         timely and complete submission of required paper work for payroll and record-keeping (Web-time entry, verification forms)

         timely and complete submission of support documentation (scheduling, attendance, tutoring journals)

         participating in required bimonthly meetings/ trainings

         observing and mentoring ASAP tutor colleagues

 
Contribute to team effort by: 5% Marginal
 

         behaving in a professional manner as a representative of ASAP and the UI

         performing related tasks and other duties as assigned

         collecting data and completing evaluations and assessments at the end of each semester

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

         Grade of A or B in the course being tutored OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the course being tutored

         Reference from one professor in your major area of study who can attest to your knowledge, skills and suitability to tutor.

         Ability to communicate knowledge of course content in a way that is meaningful to students

         Ability to adapt to a variety of students with a wide range of abilities and diverse learning styles

         Ability to demonstrate verbal and written command of the English language

         Ability to attend and participate in mandatory pre-service and in-service trainings and meetings.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
 

         Course work in the same subject areas and above the level of courses being tutored

         Previous experience tutoring or in related work

         Taken same University of Idaho class from the same professor as the student(s) being tutored
