Tutors provide academic assistance in the form of tutoring individuals, structured small groups, and/or open drop-in sessions to facilitate student academic success. Most tutors work an average of 2 -10 hours per week, usually tutoring subjects in their major and/or minor fields. Tutors may be assigned to individuals and/or requested small groups throughout the semester. All subject areas are needed, from Business, Social Sciences (Sociology, History, Science (Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Biology), Computer Science, Engineering, Math (Calculus, Algebra, Statistics), Natural Resources, Agricultural Sciences, Family & Consumer Sciences , Arts & Architecture,
Foreign Languages, etc.

Responsibility, % of Time, Essential/Marginal

Provide academic assistance to UI students by: 90%, Essential

• scheduling tutoring sessions with Student Support Services students to work on an individual basis – one or more hours per week

• tutoring students in pre-arranged, structured small groups – one hour per group per week

• providing ongoing, discipline-specific guidance at open drop-in sessions – as assigned at the beginning of each term

• adapting to each student's individual needs and learning styles

• fostering active learning and independent thinking

• aiding in comprehension of course material

• facilitating group discussion and group learning in structured small groups or drop-in/open sessions

• guiding students to answer their own questions through examination of class notes and course material

• modeling appropriate study skills, attitude, and behavior – no cell phones, social media, or headphones during sessions


Establish and maintain program requirements by: 5% Essential

• submitting required paper work for payroll and record-keeping

• attending scheduled meetings for all tutors – 1 or 2 per semester

• completing training to satisfy CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) Level 1 Certification

– additional training for higher levels of certification is optional

• observing and mentoring other TAAP tutors

• assisting Tutoring & College Success Program Specialist with tutor training


Contribute to team effort by: 5% Marginal

• performing related tasks and other duties as assigned

• completing evaluations at the end of each semester


· Grade of A or B in the course being tutored OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the course being tutored
· Name and contact information of one professor in your major area of study who can attest to your knowledge, skills and suitability to tutor.
· Ability to communicate knowledge of course content in a way that is meaningful to students
· Ability to adapt to a variety of students with a wide range of abilities and diverse learning styles
· Ability to demonstrate verbal and written command of the English language

*Employment may be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background check.*

· Course work in the same subject areas and above the level of courses being tutored
· Previous experience tutoring or in related work
· Taken same University of Idaho class from the same professor as the student(s) being tutored

Pay Rate Information

Pay rates below are for individual tutors. Group tutoring rates are higher.
Undergraduates = $8.00
BS/BA = $9.00

Master’s or above = $10.00
